Amsterdam Film and Media Studies

Overview

Amsterdam’s unique and recognisable landscape has seen the city become the backdrop for countless movies and television programs.

A Media Studies trip to the iconic canals of Amsterdam is the perfect opportunity to pinpoint scenes from world-famous films, such as ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and 007’s ‘Diamonds Are Forever’.

Your students can learn more about the history of cinema and film at the EYE Filmmuseum and can even take part in a hands-on workshop!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Flight from the UK to Amsterdam and transfer to accommodation.

    A trip to Amsterdam wouldn't be complete without a canal cruise, which provides a stunning backdrop to the city’s historical centre.

    As you sit back and relax, you will get front-row views of beautiful 17th century houses, charming bridges and old merchant houses. Plus, you can see modern architecture lining the banks, providing a stunning contrast! 

  2. Day 2

    Start your day with a visit to the exhibitions at the Eye Filmmuseum and discover what cinema equipment and film strips used to look like.

    There, you can take part in a hands-on film workshop, specially tailored to your student’s age group.  Choose between 'making a short film', 'movie makeup', 'animation sensation' and more!

    Afterwards enjoy a guided tour of Amsterdam and take in the sights, including the Bloemenmarkt, a market set on barges selling all kinds of flowers, and Schreierstoren, the point from which Henry Hudson set sail to North America which led to the foundation of modern New York. 

    Later that evening, watch an IMAX film of your choice at one of Amsterdam’s local cinemas.

  3. Day 3

    Begin the morning with a guided tour of the Pathé Tuschinski Theatre, a restored 1920s movie palace and an important cinematic institution where Dutch film premieres often take place.

    Head on over to pick up some last-minute souvenirs from the quirky design shops in De 9 Straatjes ("The Nine Streets"), the city's most picturesque micro-neighbourhood.

    Enjoy some leisure time in Jordaan, a neighbourhood dotted with independent art galleries and antiques shops.

    In the afternoon, visit the world famous Anne Frank House and take part in an educational workshop.  Your students will gain an insight into the persecution of the Jews throughout the Second World War.

    OR

    Visit Moco Museum Amsterdam, a modern art museum including works by Banksy, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, amongst others! 

    Evening flight back to the UK.

Accommodation

Our groups visiting Amsterdam tend to stay at A&O Amsterdam Zuidoost or the MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam City West.  Our accommodation is usually 2* or youth hostel standard and provides a perfect base for enjoying your tour.   All accommodation we use is audited, and our auditing regime is verified by independent experts.
