Art & Photography in Glasgow

Overview

From Baroque, to Impressionist, to Contemporary, to Street Art… there’s an art scene to be reckoned with in Glasgow.  Home to one of Europe's great art collections at the Kelvingrove, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the GoMA, Glasgow is a cultural hub and an art lover’s paradise.

The streets are packed with Art Nouveau architecture, sprawling parks and trendy neighbourhoods.  On even a short stroll through the city, your students will be surrounded by inspiration, so make sure to bring your cameras and sketch pads!

Step out of the city and travel to nearby Loch Lomond – the largest inland stretch of water in Britain.  This is another excellent opportunity to take some pictures of the stunning natural landscape.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart school and travel to Glasgow.

    Visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, home to one of Europe's great art collections!  Here, you'll be able to explore the works of a range of artists, including the Dutch Masters and Salvador Dalí.

    Take a stroll through the lovely Kelvingrove Park, a classic example of Victorian design.  The park offers many opportunities for budding photographers - be sure to pay a visit to the bandstand and amphitheatre.

    Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    Glasgow is a city which is proud of its local artists and their inspirational, colourful, installations. Follow the Glasgow Mural Trail to take in some of the city's local street art. The huge range of artwork on display has something to suit all tastes - conservative to radical, quirky to bizarre.

    The Gallery of Modern Art is Glasgow's most visited art gallery and a world class art museum. The museum displays a wide range of works by local and international artists and is home to an array of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

     

  3. Day 3

    Day trip to Loch Lomond.

    First, take a ride on the Loch Lomond Experience Cruise.  This one hour circular tour of Loch Lomond's South basin enjoys views of the magnificent Ben Lomond and passes a number of Loch Lomond's stately homes and castles along the shoreline.  Take in the scenery of the surrounding area - the perfect opportunity to take some photographs!

    Explore the local farmer's market on the shores of Loch Lomond.  This is the perfect opportunity to buy some lunch!

    Take in the stunning scenery of Loch Lomond from Balmaha!  For the adventurous among the group, a hike up Conic Hill will provide some excellent views of the surrounding area.

    Spend the evening bowling!

  4. Day 4

    Admire the stained glass windows and medieval architecture of Glasgow Cathedral! One of Scotland's most magnificent medieval buildings, Glasgow Cathedral is the only one on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Reformation of 1560 intact.

    Enjoy some free time on Buchanan Street, grab some lunch and some souvenirs as you explore Glasgow city centre!

    Afterwards, pay a visit to the Hunterian Art Gallery. Boasting one of the most distinguished public art collections in Scotland, the permanent displays include works from Rubens and Rembrandt to the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys! 

    The Hunterian also houses one of the most important collections of the work of Scottish architect, designer and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  While you’re there, make sure to see The Mackintosh House, a meticulous reassemblage of the principal interiors from the Mackintoshes’ Glasgow home.

    Journey back to school.
