Overview

Berlin’s reputation as a haven for creativity and expression has attracted artists from all around the world.  The fall of the Berlin Wall led to whole neighbourhoods being abandoned in the 90s, making way for artists’ communes to move in.  They’ve been plastering the city’s walls with constantly changing street art ever since then.

On even a short stroll through the city, your students will be surrounded by inspiration, so make sure to bring your cameras and sketch pads!

Meanwhile, Berlin’s art museums have some of the most varied collections in Europe, from the Old Masters right up to cutting edge sculpture and photography, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Fly to Berlin and settle in at your accommodation.

    Wander down the East Side Gallery, the longest open-air gallery in the world!  This 1316 metre section of the Berlin Wall is covered in murals by artists from 21 countries, which touch on themes such as peace and human rights.

    Spend the evening in Alexanderplatz and take the lift up to the top of the TV Tower, the flagship of East German architecture.

  2. Day 2

    Gain an insight into Berlin's urban and alternative art scene on a Street Art Walking Tour, guided by a local member of the scene.  Let us know if you’d like to add a hands-on street art workshop!

    Explore the Art Nouveau shopping courtyards in Hackescher Markt.

    After lunch, visit one of the world-class museums on Museum Island, a whole island which is a beautiful work of art itself!  Our favourite is the Alte Nationalgalerie, with its extensive collection of Romantic, Impressionist and Modernist paintings.

    In the evening, climb up the spiral staircase to the incredible glass dome of the Reichstag Building, for a 360-degree view of Berlin’s skyline.

  3. Day 3

    Morning visit to the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in an atmospheric former train station.  It’s home to famous works by Andy Warhol, John Cage, Roy Lichtenstein and many more.

    Wander through the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, a disorienting Holocaust memorial made up of 2711 concrete slabs in wave-like, undulating formations.

    Learn about the Bauhaus movement in art, design and architecture at the Bauhaus Archive.

    Depart Berlin on an afternoon flight back to the UK.
