Bologna Food Studies

Overview

Bologna is considered by many to be Italy's gastronomic capital, making it the perfect base for a Food Studies school trip!  Bologna and the surrounding area boast plenty of local delicacies including balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and prosciutto to name a few.  Students will have the opportunity to visit family-run factories to witness the manufacturing process behind these products and what makes them so unique. 

Students will also be able to discover the rich food culture of Bologna through guided food walking tours and market visits, as well as having the opportunity to take part in a gelato workshop and cookery class! 

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Flight from the UK to Bologna or Pisa.

    Discover each stage of the complex production process behind balsamic vinegar with a guided tour of an Italian Aceto Balsamico factory. 

    Transfer to your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    In the morning, enjoy a guided tour of a local Parmigiano Reggiano factory to learn about how this famous cheese is produced using their ancient milk processing traditions. 

    Spend some free time in Modena, Italy’s gastronomic capital!

    Then visit a Prosciutto di Modena factory for a guided tour to see how this traditional cured ham product is manufactured. 

  3. Day 3

    Visit the Mercato Quadrilatero to witness a traditional Italian food market in action!

    In the afternoon, learn about the production process of the delicious Italian gelato with a Gelato Experience workshop at the Carpigiani Gelato museum.

    Afterwards, get a taste of Bologna’s enviable food scene with a guided walking tour of the old medieval market streets.

  4. Day 4

    On your last day, enjoy a visit to Grand Tour Italia, a food park where you can experience food from all 20 Italian regions and learn how to make fresh pasta with an Italian Cookery Class!

    Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
