Cologne Science

Overview

Famous for its spectacular cathedral, carnival and Christmas markets, Cologne is also the beating heart of Germany’s industrial Rhineland.  The region has a rich history of scientific discoveries, including our most famous prehistoric relatives, the Neanderthals.

Cologne is an excellent base for exploring the Rhineland’s science museums.  A highlight is the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) School Lab, a former astronaut training facility where students can experience a day in the life of an aerospace researcher.  Why not round off your trip with an unforgettable day at Phantasialand, one of Germany’s most popular theme parks?

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Travel overnight to Cologne.

    Arrive in Cologne and freshen up at your accommodation.

    Visit the famous Gothic Cathedral and climb the 500 steps of the cathedral tower for a magnificent view over the Rhine.

    In the afternoon, shop for souvenirs in the Old Town.

  2. Day 2

    Take part in a full-day programme at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) School Lab,  conducting your own experiments and experiencing a day in the life of an aerospace researcher.

  3. Day 3

    In the morning, visit the Mathematikum, the world's first mathematical science centre. See if you can stand in the giant soap bubble!

    Later in the afternoon, visit KölnTriangle to see the city from a whole new perspective, over 100m high! This viewing platform provides 360-degree views of Cologne and beyond. 

     

  4. Day 4

    Feel the effects of gravity at Phantasialand theme park!

  5. Day 5

    Return journey to school.
