Cornwall: Seals and Sharks

Overview

As well as many fascinating geographical features, Cornwall is a county that is rich with diverse wildlife.  There are a number of exciting visits that will allow you to get up close with lots of different animals and see them in recreated natural habitats.

There are a number of organisations which focus on wildlife conservation and protecting species from becoming endangered.  These visits will give students an understanding of the challenges within the animal kingdom and what they can do to help!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart school and travel to Cornwall.

    Visit Tintagel Castle and immerse yourself in history, myths and stunning scenery.  The castle is closely linked with the legend of King Arthur and the dramatic castle and coastline have inspired writers and painters for centuries.

    Then head to the National Lobster Hatchery, a charity organisation that focuses on research and education about the European lobster.

    Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    Start your day by visiting the Eden Project.  Dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World by some, the Eden Project is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches.

    In the afternoon, visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan, one of the most loved and romantic gardens in the UK.  There are over 200 acres to explore, with lots of wildlife, a variety of plants and even a jungle.

  3. Day 3

    Begin the day by visiting the Blue Reef Aquarium, home to 40 naturally-themed habitats.  You can go on a journey from the Cornish coasts to further afield in the exotic seas.  See lots of exciting animals, including loggerhead sea turtles, reef sharks, and shoals of colourful fish.

    Then head to Newquay Zoo and get close to over 1000 of the world’s rarest and endangered animals.  The animals live in recreated natural habitats and the zoo is passionate about conserving their futures and protecting them from extinction.

    Optional Extra visit: Try your hand at Cornish Pasty making in an exciting workshop with an expert pasty maker!

  4. Day 4

    Start with a visit to the National Maritime Museum and uncover Cornwall’s rich maritime heritage.  You’ll get great views of Falmouth and be able to see fascinating exhibitions and collections.

    Before heading home, visit the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline.  The sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care.

    Return to school.
