There are few more charming and vibrant European capital cities than Hungary’s capital Budapest. With the iconic Danube river splitting the distinctive sides of Buda and Pest, this city is full of centuries of culture and history.

With visits to Buda Castle, the Hungarian Parliament Building and City Park, there truly is no better way to be immersed in Hungarian culture and to discover lesser-known European history. 

With museums detailing Hungary’s storied past and visits to suit all age groups, Budapest is waiting for you!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Morning flight to Budapest and public transport to your accommodation in the centre.

    Get your bearings in the thriving Jewish Quarter, the beating heart of the city and home to the largest synagogue in Europe!

    Optional evening activity: Boat Cruise on the River Danube to see the sights from a unique perspective. 

  2. Day 2

    Begin your day by taking in the sights and smells of local produce and Hungarian specialities at the Great Market Hall, Budapest's grandest and largest market, built in 1897!

    Explore the Castle Hill District on the Buda side of the Danube and enjoy its spectacular views over the river. Matthias Church with its striking roof design is a particular highlight!

    Next, it is time to have some time at the fortress of Fisherman's Bastion, featuring seven white towers representing the seven Magyar tribes that settled the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century. Then, roam the grounds of Buda Castle, the historical home and palace complex of the Kings of Hungary.

    In the afternoon, head over to the Pest side and visit the Hungarian Parliament Building, mesmerising from the inside and out! The Dome Hall is home to the Holy Crown of Hungary, one of the oldest royal jewels in the world!

    Visit the Hospital in the Rock, which played an important historical role as an emergency facility during both the Second World War and the 1956 revolution.

    Finish the day with some leisure time on Vörösmarty tér, Budapest’s main shopping avenue. 

  3. Day 3

    Morning visit to the House of Terror, a monument to those held captive, tortured and killed in the very building. Today, this building houses a brilliant yet chilling museum with exhibitions detailing the brutal Nazi and Soviet occupations of Hungary.

    Grab a group photo at Heroes’ Square before having some leisure time in City Park, home to the world-famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths and the iconic Vajdahunyad Castle.

    In the afternoon, get to know over a thousand animals at Budapest Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world!

  4. Day 4

    In the morning, hike up Gellért Hill to the Citadella, a perfect opportunity for panoramic views of both the Buda and Pest sides of the Danube.

    Visit the Hungarian National Museum, which tells the story of Hungary from prehistoric times to the present day.

    Public transport to Budapest Airport and afternoon/evening flight back to the UK.
