Dorset Geography

Overview

Dorset, located on the English Channel Coast, is recognised as having one of Britain's most beautiful shorelines.

The county is home to iconic landforms such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, and thus serves as an excellent destination for a Geography or Geology trip.  The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast provides 185 million years of history, meaning your students will have access to an extensive range of geographical topics, including coastal erosion, flood defences and conservation, to name a few.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Travel to Dorset by coach.

    Explore the stunning Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with an expert guide.

    Visit Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, recognised as some of the best places in the UK to study coastal processes, geology and ecology.

  2. Day 2

    Enjoy a short presentation and guided walk of Chesil Beach, a bank of 180 billion pebbles stretching for 18 miles along the Dorset Coast.

    Stop by the impressive Portland Bill Lighthouse.

  3. Day 3

    Visit the Charmouth Heritage Centre, an excellent resource for schools, with interactive touch screen displays, fossil touch tables, fossil discovery digs, aquarium tanks, and a Jurassic Theatre.

    Go on a guided Geology and Geomorphology Tour.  Learn about the local geology, the landslide systems of West Dorset, together with an analysis of the composition of the beach and local conservation policy.
