Dublin History and Politics

Overview

Dublin is the city that wears everything on its sleeve, from its fascinating history to its brilliant personality.  There is fantastic range of visits that will help your students gain an understanding of Ireland’s history, and how events such as the Easter Rising have shaped the country as it is today.

Dublin brings history vividly alive and you can visit many of the locations associated with the growth of Irish nationalism from the late 18th century to the creation of the Irish Free State.  If you are studying more recent British History and Politics, there are some fascinating tours exploring Ireland from the partition to the Northern Ireland peace process.

You could also consider combining this trip with Belfast, a city rich in history and culture!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Flight from UK.

    Start your trip with a visit to the General Post Office Museum.  This interactive museum will give you an insight into modern Irish history as the GPO was the headquarters for the 1916 Easter Rising which eventually led to the creation of the Irish Republic.

    Then go on a Guided Walking Tour of Dublin and further explore the main features of Dublin’s history.  The tour includes locations such as Trinity College, City Hall and St Stephen’s Green.

    Visit the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, the world’s only fully digital museum, which tells the moving and unforgettable stories of those who left Ireland, and how they shaped and influenced the world.

  2. Day 2

    Begin your day with a visit to Kilmainham Gaol, where some of Ireland’s most disturbing and inspirational historical dramas have played out.  Through the centuries, the Gaol has ‘hosted’ the likes of Robert Emmet, Parnell and the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

    Then head to the National Museum of Ireland where students will get a general introduction to the political, social and cultural events leading up to the Rising, Easter week in Dublin and its aftermath.

    Afterwards, visit Dublin Castle which has had continuous occupation since its establishment in 1204AD.  It has played a prominent role in Ireland’s history and is now a major government complex.

    Spend an evening in Grafton Street, with a great variety of retail stores, cafés and restaurants.

  3. Day 3

    On your final day, explore Ireland's number one visitor attraction, the Guinness Storehouse.  You can learn about the history of ‘the black stuff’ and discover how this famous beer is brewed. 

    Then pay a visit to Trinity College, the oldest university in Ireland, founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I.  The college was originally set up for protestant education and opened its doors to Catholics in 1793.

    Return flight to UK.
