Granada: Art & History

Overview

The distinctive rose-hued Alhambra dominates Granada, overlooking the sprawling city from its vantage point high up on La Sabica Hill.  Inside is one of the more splendid sights of Europe, a network of lavishly decorated palaces and irrigated gardens, a World Heritage Site and the subject of scores of legends and fantasies.

Granada is not just about the magnificent Alhambra though; everything in this city is influenced by its glorious past.  The world renowned palaces and fortresses of the Nasrid Dynasty and the historical Moorish Albaicín Quarter are both designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, too.

You can also enjoy an Outdoor Language Class to practise your Spanish before heading to the markets!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Morning flight to Málaga.

    Transfer to Granada by coach and spend the afternoon exploring Granada’s old town, the Parte Vieja.  Be sure not to miss the Alcaicería or the old Moorish silk market!

  2. Day 2

    In the morning, enjoy a Spanish language class in the sunshine! Here, you can practise your language skills before heading into the city! 

    In the afternoon, wander through the Albaicín, Granada’s medieval Moorish Quarter, where the Moorish influence on Granada’s architecture can be soon throughout.  If you feel up to the walk, don’t miss the amazing Mirador San Nicolás which offers spectacular views over La Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada.

    Afterwards, visit Catedral de Granada. Its outstanding facades and impressive interiors are a sight to behold!  The cathedral is a striking example of Spanish Renaissance and Gothic Architecture, housing a stunning collection of Renaissance art which once belonged to Queen Isabella.

  3. Day 3

    In the morning, take your students on a Photography Treasure Hunt across the city!  Students will need to follow clues in Spanish to complete the treasure hunt, who will get to the end first?  (A guide will join you to explain the activity and help you along the way).

    OR

    Visit the spectacular Alhambra, one of the most enduring legacies of the Moors in Spain.  A fortress, a palace, and now a World Heritage Site, the Alhambra is undoubtedly Granada’s most iconic landmark.

    At lunchtime, visit Mercado San Agustín to pick up some lunch.  Students can order in Spanish too if they fancy putting their language skills to the test!  

    In the afternoon, learn one of Spain’s most expressive dances, the Flamenco!  You will take part in an exciting Flamenco Workshop where students will be encouraged to work as a team as they learn the steps.  A great unforgettable experience for all!

    OR

    If dancing isn’t for you, visit Museo Casa de los Tiros, home to 17th-19th century paintings, traditional textures, 19th century furniture, and much more!

  4. Day 4

    Transfer to Málaga for your flight home.  Before heading to the airport, stop in Málaga for a chance to visit one of its fabulous beaches.

    Late afternoon flight home.

In Granada, our groups normally stay at either the Eco Hostel, Hostal Atenas or Hotel Anacapri.  If you have a preference of where you would like to stay, please let us know.  All accommodation we use is safe, secure, especially suited to schools.  All accommodation we use is audited, and our auditing regime is verified by independent experts.
