La Rochelle French Culture and Language

Overview

La Rochelle is one of France’s loveliest coastal towns.  Its historic port is beautifully preserved with a quayside full of boats large and small, and a seafront packed with lively cafes and restaurants.  The old port area of Le Vieux Port is dominated by three 14th and 15th century towers that stand tall at its entrance; they are among the town’s main tourist attractions.  The vista from the top of the Tour de la Lanterne in particular is simply wonderful. 

There is plenty to see and do in La Rochelle; its interesting mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the huge covered market, and the Ile de Ré are particular highlights here.

La Rochelle is a lovely location for a school French trip, slightly off the beaten track, full of authentic French experiences and plenty of opportunities to practise your French.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart school in the evening to travel to France.

  2. Day 2

    Arrive at your accommodation.

    Have some time to explore La Rochelle's picturesque Old Port and pick up some souvenirs in Rue de Palais. Visit La Rochelle's historic towers in Le Vieux Port to get great views over the marina.

    Visit La Rochelle Aquarium and immerse yourself in the mysteries of the ocean, with 12,000 marine animals including formidable sharks and quirky jellyfish.

  3. Day 3

    Discover La Rochelle’s famous covered market in Les Halles, practise your French and experience the hustle and bustle of a French market.

    Hop over to the Ile de Ré and explore the historic fortified port town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saint-Martin de Ré.

    Enjoy a guided tour of L'Abeille de Ré, a beekeeping farm and learn all about the wonderful world of honey-making.

    Visit the Phare des Baleines, the second-oldest lighthouse in France (and still in use today!). Climbing the 257 steps to the top gives you breath-taking views of the island.

    Depart La Rochelle in the evening for the return journey home.

  4. Day 4

    Arrive back to school early in the morning.
