Literary Dublin!

Overview

As a UNESCO City of Literature, Dublin is a fantastic place to discover more about Ireland’s literary heritage and the place that inspired writers such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker and Jonathan Swift.  Our literary tours include a range of historical visits with a literary focus, allowing students to discover the story behind some of the most famous literary works to come from Irish writers.

You might also consider combining this trip with our Literary Belfast itinerary or another one of our Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland itineraries.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart school and travel by plane to Dublin.

    Begin your trip with a guided literary walk around Dublin, a UNESCO City of Literature.  The guide will take you to places of interest closely associated with famous Irish writers, poets and playwrights, including James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Jonathan Swift and more.

    Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    In the morning, visit the Chester Beatty Library.  Manuscripts, miniature paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and decorative arts complete this amazing collection - the result of the collecting activities of one man, Sir Alfred Chester Beatty!

    In the afternoon, stop by Trinity College, one of Dublin's must-see attractions.  It is Ireland's oldest university and many famous writers were educated here, including Oscar Wilde.

    Head to the National Museum of Ireland where students will get a general introduction to the political, social and cultural events leading up to the Rising, Easter week in Dublin and its aftermath.

    OR

    End the day with a visit to the General Post Office Museum.  This interactive museum will give you an insight into modern Irish history as the GPO was the headquarters for the 1916 Easter Rising which eventually led to the creation of the Irish Republic.

  3. Day 3

    Begin your final day with a visit to Kilmainham Gaol, where some of Ireland’s most disturbing and inspirational historical dramas have played out.  Through the centuries, the Gaol has ‘hosted’ the likes of Robert Emmet, Parnell and the leaders of the 1916 Rising.

    Stop for lunch in the vast Phoenix Park, home to the official residency of the President of Ireland and Dublin Zoo!

    Travel by plane back to the UK and return to school.
