Munich Engineering

Overview

Munich is well established as the tech capital of Germany and countless household names in manufacturing have plants or headquarters there.  Several of them offer guided tours, opening a window into their high-tech production lines, including automotive giants BMW and Audi.

What’s more: now that Munich is working towards a greener future, creative minds have come up with innovative ways to bring clean, renewable energy to its residents.

All this makes it an inspiring and exciting destination for Key Stage 5 students considering a career or a degree in engineering.  Our suggested itinerary is designed to showcase a range of fields of engineering and a flavour of what it might be like to work in them.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Fly to Munich and settle in at your accommodation.

    Get your bearings on a guided walk in the city centre.

    Optional evening activity: enjoy a traditional Bavarian meal in the beautiful Ratskeller!

  2. Day 2

    Today you’ll see automotive engineering in action!

    Get up close to the robotic production line at the Audi Factory Ingolstadt.  You’ll accompany a car body on its journey to final assembly!

    Spend the afternoon at the BMW Museum to gain an insight into the design and branding process.  Alternatively, we can arrange a guided tour of the BMW Plant – let us know what you’re interested in!

    Spend some free time this evening exploring the Olympic Park.

  3. Day 3

    Head to the Allianz Arena, with the outside facade made entirely out of inflatable cushions which light up to match the home team Bayern Munich's colours! A tour guide will introduce you to the stadium which has hosted World Cups, Bundesliga and Euros games! 

    In the afternoon, take a fascinating look behind the scenes on a Munich Airport tour.  You’ll see operational procedures and learn how an airport works as a complete system.

    After your tour, check in for your evening flight back to the UK.

Accommodation

For Munich trips, our schools tend to stay at one of the A&O hostels, a short U-Bahn ride from the city centre.  We use safe and secure accommodation especially suited to schools.  All accommodation we use is audited, and our auditing regime is verified by independent experts.
