Munich: History and Holocaust

Overview

Since its foundation, Munich has played a pivotal role in German history and politics, especially in the birth and rise of the National Socialism movement in the early 1930s.  Students will gain an understanding of Nazism’s early years, which included one of Hitler’s attempted coups d’état – the Beer Hall Putsch.

Combine your stay in Munich with a day trip to Nuremberg, to witness the peak of the Nazi regime at the former Rally Grounds, along with its fall at the Memorium Nuremberg Trials.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Morning flight and transfer to accommodation.

    Explore the city on a 'National Socialism & Resistance' guided tour, and see the infamous streets where some of the darkest stories of Hitler's dictatorship took root.

    Round up your first day with an evening in Marienplatz, the city's main square.  don't miss the daily "glockenspiel", in which clockwork figures perform an elaborate dance on the façade of the New Town Hall.

  2. Day 2

    Visit the Munich Jewish Museum for an introduction into Jewish life in the Bavarian capital through the years.

    Coach transfer to Dachau.

    Tour the site of the Nazi's first concentration camp at Dachau, now a memorial to those who suffered and died there between 1933 and 1945.

    Relax after this emotional visit with some free time in Karlsplatz, one of Munich's most famous squares.

  3. Day 3

    Coach transfer to Nuremberg.

    The north wing of the unfinished Congress Hall on the former Nazi Party Rally grounds is now occupied by the Dokuzentrum and its permanent exhibition “Fascination and Terror”, which recalls the megalomania of the National Socialist regime.

    The Memorium Nuremberg Trials informs visitors about the background, progression and repercussions of the Trials, at the original location where they were held.

  4. Day 4

    Visit the White Rose Foundation exhibition telling the story of students' resistance against Hitler in Munich, between 1942 and 1943.

    Unwind in the tranquil Englischer Garten before your flight home.
