Science in Iceland

Overview

Iceland’s unique ecology, dramatic geological features and pioneering use of geothermal energy make it a fascinating destination for Science.  School trips to Iceland are always highly memorable with outstanding educational content.

There is plenty to see and do here and we offer itineraries covering a wide range of topics: renewable energy, climate change, ecosystems, evolution, DNA, and plate tectonics.  During the summer months, it’s a fantastic place for whale watching, and in the winter, you may see the incredible Aurora Borealis!

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Morning flight to Reykjavik (Keflavik Airport).

    Start your Icelandic experience with a dip in the world famous Blue Lagoon to witness and experience the effects of geothermal activity.

    OR

    Enjoy a Whale Watching Boat Tour with an expert crew and specially trained naturalists in search for the wildlife of Reykjavík.

    Optional evening activity: Discover the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights with a local guide (from October to mid-April).

  2. Day 2

    Start your day discovering Iceland's extensive use of its natural geothermal energy with a fascinating visit to the exhibition at Hellisheiði Power Plant.

    OR

    Enjoy an informative tour of the Hveragerði Geothermal Park, with an opportunity to see the geothermal hot springs!

    Then learn how, through the use of geothermal technology, the Greenhouses of Fridheimar produce 370 tons of tomatoes throughout the year!

    Follow this up with a visit to Strokkur geyser, a very active fountain geyser that shoots boiling water up to 40 metres into the air every 5 minutes!

    Afterwards, admire Gullfoss Waterfall, which consists of two steps of 11m and 20m, each made of hard volcanic rock that resists erosion

    Finish your day with some free time visiting Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital!

  3. Day 3

    Start your day with a visit to DeCODE Genetics and learn about DNA mapping through their unique expertise and population resources.  DeCODE has discovered key genetic risk factors for dozens of common diseases ranging from cardiovascular disease to cancer!

    Afterwards, visit the exhibitions at Perlan, where you will see, hear and feel the power of volcanoes, earthquakes and geothermal energy.

    Then enjoy a show in its Planetarium which will take you on an immersive audio and visual journey to experience legendary landscapes bathed in Nordic lights.

    Continue your day trip with a visit to the Lava Centre, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years.

    Top up your day with a visit Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where it is possible to walk behind the cascade via a footpath at its base.

  4. Day 4

    On your last morning in Iceland, visit Sudurnes Science and Learning Center, a research centre with an emphasis on natural science.

    (Sudurnes Science and Learning Center is closed between September and April). 

    Grab some last minute souvenirs from the city centre, then head back to the coach. 

    Flight back home.
