Overview

Germany: ‘the mother of so many of the witches’.

With approximately half of those executed for witchcraft being from Germany, it is no wonder why the area is known as the ‘heartland of the witch craze’. Step back in time and into areas including Trier, Bamberg and Würzburg- the scenes of some of the most significant and extensive witch hunts in European history.

Delve into the historic identity of the region from the Middle Ages through to World War 2; explore the picturesque areas of Frankfurt, Bamberg and Nuremberg.

You'll arrive in amazement and leave with a deeper understanding of the region's history as well as a clear picture of the factors leading to the witch trials, how the persecutions operated, and the aftermath of the witch hunts. 

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Flight from UK to Hahn Airport. 

    Private coach transfer to your accommodation in Frankfurt. 

    Spend some time on the Zeil, Germany's most famous shopping street, home to huge department stores and chic boutiques. 

    Have dinner at your accommodation and settle in! 

  2. Day 2

    Private coach transfer to Würzburg.

    Head to the Marienberg Fortress for a guided tour. Learn about its place in history from the Middle Ages to the Baroque Period. Plus, you can experience stunning panoramic views of the city from the top! 

    Then, head to the stunning town of Bamberg. Wander through its medieval streets where time seems to have stopped! A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, admire the timber houses, the flowing river and beautiful bridges that look straight out of a postcard. 

    Next, explore the dark side of Bamberg's past with a guided tour about the witch trials in Bamberg. Follow the story of the witch hunts in this region, it is as intriguing as it is terrifying.

  3. Day 3

    Private coach transfer to Trier. 

    Discover the only museum dedicated to the life and work of Karl Marx. Explore his birthplace to unwind the story of his works and theories in the present day. 

    Next, explore a guided tour, tracking the witch hunts in Trier. This tour explores the witch hunts that raged fiercely in Trier in the 16th and 17th centuries and sheds light of all aspects of belief in witches.

  4. Day 4

    Private coach transfer to Nuremberg. 

    Spend some leisure time in Karolinenstraße, Nuremberg's most well-known shopping street! This is the perfect opportunity to grab some souvenirs. 

    Visit the Dokuzentrum Nuremberg, the North wing of the unfinished Congress Hall on the former Nazi Party Rally grounds. Today, this space is home to the Dokuzentrum which reflects on the megalomania of the National Socialist regime.

  5. Day 5

    Private coach transfer to the airport, with a stop on the way!

    Visit the Hexenturm Idstein! The Witch Tower is the oldest surviving building in Idstein and holds a plaque at the base of the tower in memory of victims of the Idstein witch trials of 1676. It lists the names of the known victims, 31 women and 8 men. 

    Flight from Hahn Airport back to the UK.
