WW2 in Dover

Overview

Dover is a great destination for a history trip and will give students the chance to understand World War II from a local perspective and learn more about wartime Britain.  You will have the opportunity to visit some fascinating museums, exploring unique exhibits including the legendary Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft.

You will also have the chance to visit the tunnels that were purpose-built as Air Raid Precaution tunnels where thousands took shelter and lived under the town of Ramsgate.  Head to the Battle of Britain Memorial, a poignant space for quiet reflection from which you will get superb views across the channel to France.

You might consider combining this itinerary with our London in WW2 trip, or even a day or two on the Opal Coast, just a hop across the channel.

Our Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Depart School and travel to Dover

    Visit the Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum to explore a fascinating collection of artefacts from World War II, including a Supermarine Spitfire Mk XVI and the Hawker Hurricane IIC.

    Then head on a tour of the Ramsgate Tunnels – starting with a short film in a 150-year-old Victorian Railway Tunnel. You will be able to discover how the tunnels were built and understand a bit about life down there.

    Arrive and settle into your accommodation.

  2. Day 2

    Start your day by visiting Dover Castle to explore 2000 years of history, from its foundations in the 11th century, to its vital role in both world wars.  You will be able to climb to the rooftops for spectacular views across the English Channel.

    Then head to the Battle of Britain Memorial where you can show your respect to the heroes who fought.  It was about this battle that Winston Churchill said, “Never in the field of conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”.

    Afterwards, visit the Battle of Britain Museum where you can see the world’s largest collection of memorabilia from the Battle of Britain.

    (The Battle of Britain Museum is closed between December and March, if you are travelling during this time, an alternative visit will be arranged instead). 

    Return to School.
