Geography in Iceland

Morning flight to Reykjavik (Keflavik Airport).

Before making your way to your accommodation, visit the Bridge Between Two Continents and walk across the gap between two plates?  Students can see for themselves the scarred boundary of the Eurasian and North American plates.

Golden Circle daytrip

Start your day with a dip in the Secret Lagoon, Iceland’s first public swimming pool! It has kept its natural aspects making it the perfect place for an authentic geothermal experience.

Then, set off for Þingvellir National Park where the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is clearly visible.

Follow this up with a visit to Strokkur geyser, a very active fountain geyser which shoots boiling water up to 40 metres into the air every 5 minutes!

Then finish the day admiring Gullfoss Waterfall, which consists of two steps of 11m and 20m, each made of hard volcanic rock that resists erosion.  On a sunny day the glacial meltwater tumbling down the 32m chasm truly looks golden!

Optional extra: Explore the magnificent lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir, one of the longest and best-known lava tubes in Iceland.

Then, finish your busy day with a visit to Perlan Exhibition. You can see, hear and feel the power of volcanoes, earthquakes and geothermal energy! Plus, there's a planetarium where you can spot the northern lights!

South Shore daytrip

Start the day visiting Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where it is possible to walk behind the cascade via a footpath at its base.

Next, admire Skógafoss Waterfall, one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland! In the distance you will see Iceland’s most famous volcanic glacier, Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted in the summer of 2010.

In the afternoon, you will visit Sólheimajökull Glacier, where students can clearly see the dynamics that shape the movement, volume and shape of glaciers.

Then walk along Reynisfjara, an ethereal black sand beach and admire the striking basalt formations.

Finish your daytrip at the village of Vik before returning back to your hotel. It is the southernmost village in Iceland, surrounded by beautiful valleys, beaches, cliffs and mountains.

Option extra: visit The Lava Centre, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years.

Borgarfjörður daytrip

First visit Deildartunguhver, the largest thermal spring in Iceland! You’ll also see a variety of hard fern that only grow near this thermal spring.

Continue your daytrip through Reykholt, one of the old estates of Iceland and a cultural centre both in the past and in the present.

Then admire Hraunfossar and Barnafossar Waterfalls, a natural treasure where cold springs that well up through the lava and run in falls and rapids into the Hvítá River.

Final stop will be Glanni Waterfall, a beautiful waterfall with scenic nature all around!

On your last morning in Iceland, spend some free time visiting Reykjavik, the world's northernmost capital!

Flight back home.
