Black History in London

Depart school by coach.

Arrive in London for a Black History Walking Tour filled with interesting stories and stops along the way.  Choose to explore either Brixton, one of the most ethnically diverse communities in London for an insight into the Windrush generation, or central London, for a new and Black perspective on the familiar London sites.

After your walking tour, enjoy some free time in either Brixton or Covent Garden (depending on your location).

Enjoy an evening at the theatre to see a musical or play: We suggest MJ The Musical telling the story of Michael Jackson or Tina- The Musical, showing the journey of the legend Tina Turner. Both musicals showcase Black talent taking centre stage on the West End! Let us know if you have any other ideas of what you'd like to watch! 

Start your day with a rare visit to 19 Princelet Street. Rarely opening its doors to the public, 19 Princelet Street is one of London's smallest and most important museums. Beyond its doors are secrets and threads of history that start conversations around migration, minorities and multiculturalism.  'Every schoolchild in England should see this'- Sir Bernard Crick, author of Citizenship and the Curriculum.

Afterwards, visit the Museum of London Docklands to explore the London, Sugar & Slavery gallery. Profits from the slave trade flooded into insurance, dock building and business in London; the fabric of London was woven by Black exploitation. In this gallery, you'll hear about the lives and stories of people affected by slavery. After you have left this gallery, you will enter another exhibition, Holding Emotions. This exhibition aims to explore the emotions brought up by visiting the London, Sugar & Slavery gallery. Emotions like anger, frustration and disappointment can arise, where do these emotions go?

Visit Tate Britain to see the exhibition Nigerian Modernism, celebrating Nigerian art from mid-20th century until now.  This exhibition explores the work of artists from Nigeria, alongside other artists whose work has been influenced and inspired by Nigerian themes and heritage.
